FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OWCAP seeks volunteers to strengthen local financial stability with free tax filing service

Ogden Weber Community Action Partnership will hold an event to strengthen family financial stability from Jan. 28 - April 15. Volunteers will be needed to help provide service to low income taxpayers. There are seven sites located throughout Weber County that will be announced along with their operating hours as the tax season draws near.

Volunteers are needed to help OWCAP screen and prepare federal and state tax forms for Utah families whose annual income is below $53,000 and thus are qualified to utilize the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), and asset formation programs.

"We can not perform any of these services without our volunteers. We do not have the budget to pay staffing and marketing. We rely heavily on our volunteers” said Shannon Smith, the VITA Regional Coordinator. “They are the ones welcoming the community, preparing our tax returns, and they are the face of the VITA program in Weber County. Those that feel the importance of what we are doing in the community and the importance of this program will be inspired to volunteer."

Volunteer screeners will be asked to:

  • Commit to a minimum of three hours per week from Jan. 28 – Apr. 15

  • Attend free online and classroom training from the Weber County Regional Coordinator.

  • Assist taxpayers with paperwork, ensuring participants have the correct documentation.

  • Help prepare tax returns & perform quality review.

  • Volunteers will receive IRS certification upon completion of training and testing.

  • Simple data entry position, no prior tax preparation is needed to become a volunteer.

Volunteers and taxpayers can find the nearest VITA location by calling 2-1-1 or by contacting Shannon Smith, the VITA Regional Coordinator at (801) 399-9281 ext. 309 or email ssmith@OWCAP.org with any questions.
